Port Askaig Rum Cask Finish “New Zealand Exclusive” 2013 9 Year Old Whisky 700ml
Short total age 9 years but cask-strength + rum-barrel finish, this is a rather youthful, punchy, and experimental release likely with a combination of Islay-region character peat / smoke coastal influence+ some sweetness or tropical rum-cask-derived notes. Approximately 2 years in a first-fill ex-rum barrel (i.e. a rum-cask finish/finish-barrel) before bottling.
Nose: Grassy malt and a smoky-coastal edge — think dry Islay peat / ash, sea-spray salt, maybe even a faint “oyster shell / sea breeze” mineral-marine note.
Palate: Starts with smoky peat and ashy smoke, then waves of syrupy sweetness — a blend of cane sugar or light caramel and tropical-fruit notes.
Finish: Medium length: lingering peat smoke, salt-spray mineral / brine, and a trailing syrupy sweetness — maybe cane-sugar or light molasses / brown sugar.
