While the first edition of this box focused on the ester content of the various unaged distillates, this new release reveals the impact of one year of aging in ex-Bourbon casks on the distillery’s 8 Marks. Carried out in the distillery’s official warehouses, the maturation takes place in Jamaica’s tropical climate.
Like its predecessor, The 8 Marks Collection gift box includes a flyer that recounts the history of the distillery, the characteristics of each of the 8 Marks as they age in oak barrels under tropical conditions.
It explains the many variables and factors that shape the profile of each of the rums contained in the box during maturation, providing plenty to inspire even the most curious rum enthusiast.
On one side, historical information on Jamaican rum can be found, a review of what esters are, as well as a deep dive on Hampden’s aging process.
Details of rum maturation are revealed when opening the flyer: figures, infographics, molecule structures etc. This document provides an insight into the complex world of barrel aging at Hampden: it delves into the composition of American oak, exploring how it contributes to aroma extraction from the barrels, how it evolves over time and under different climatic conditions, analysing both volatile and non-volatile wood components and much more.
Finally, to guide and complement the tasting experience, technical diagrams detail the aromatic components resulting from the aging in wood for each of the 8 Marks, and their influence on olfactory and gustatory perception.
